Sure, you may not get that red, itchy sunburn, but some sunscreens containing Vitamin A are said to actually increase the speed at which cancer develops. Nearly half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer.

With that knowledge, the best sunscreen is a hat and shirt. That way, you won’t worry about whether you may get sunburned or if the sunscreen is actually hurting you. But sometimes you want to feel the sun on your back and that’s when you ought to use EWG’s top rate sunscreen that provide UVA and UVB protection. Typically, these lotions contain either zinc or titanianium minerals to help cut the exposure.

For years Borderline Bar & Grill has had roof leaks.  The owner of Borderline for the last two years has been negotiating with the building landlord to replace the roof.  Seasons change, rain falls and the Health Department pays their yearly visit.  This year the leaks in the roof were so out of control that Borderlines permit to operate was suspended until the repairs are made.

As of two weeks ago an agreement was struck between landlord and tenant and new roof will be replaced in the next couple of weeks, weather permitting.  And there is more.  Besides the new roof there will also be some other upgrades to the club.  Carpet will be the most noticed change though outside of that there will be a few other remodeling modernizations to the interior.

If you haven’t been to Borderline, it is the place to be in the Conejo Valley.  Beside’s the typical Bar and Grill Restaurant, Borderline hosts a meeting place for pool leagues, concerts and dancing.  Almost every night of the week, Borderline has a new look.

Borderline also offers West Coast Swing night on Mondays (just like dancing with the stars); Tuesday night is Salsa night, Wednesday night is college night, and Sunday night is well known for family night.   If you have ever wanted to learn to dance this is Conejo Valley’s dancing depot.  They have great instructors teaching classes almost nightly. Classes usually run from 6:30pm till 8pm followed by open dancing till closing.

Though while the Borderline is closed, some of the dance coaches have continued their normal dancing classes at temporary locations.  Cliff Housego, the schedule coordinator and instructor for Borderline, has booked a ballroom at the Westlake Hyatt for his West Coast Swing and Night Club two step classes on Monday nights.

So next month, come & visit The Borderline Bar & Grill—with a fresh new look when they re-open in December.

Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant is back in Northridge

Remember the old hang out spot in the San Fernando Valley?

Way back when, Bob’s used to be the hang out after football games at Granada Hills High School.  Now, that location is a Carrow’s Restaurant and Bob’s has disappeared.  But not to worry my reminiscent double decker burger eaters, Bob’s Big Boy Restaurants are back and reopening in a franchised style all over the United States.  Prior to reopening, the restaurants were all owned and operated by Bob Wian as another oversized corporation.  Now, finally, Bob’s is back with a more client focused feel.

The Northridge Big Boy’s grand opening was September 14, 2009 and the other local restaurant beside the famous Burbank location on Riverside is Sunland location at 8274 Sunland Blvd.  According to our waiter, expect to see Bob’s popping up all over in the next few years.  Most pertinent is the West Hills location opening in 2010.

If the nostalgia of the Hot Fudge Cake, The Bob’s Big Boy Combo, or the best chocolate shakes is getting to you, Big Boy’s is finally back and as good as the late nights from years ago.  Bob’s even has a great Veggie Burger and it’s actually tasty!  Walking in the door at first maybe a little time consuming, (about a 20-30 minute wait) but  well worth it for the Bob’s Original special sauce.

If you find yourself roaming Northridge, drive right over to 8876 Corbin Av. on the corner of Nordhoff Street (south) in the Target/Kohl’s shopping center and reminisce the days at Bob’s.

Instead of a long drive to Hollywood or Downtown we will soon have a first class venue right here in the valley.  This 165,000 square foot, State of the Art eco-friendly structure is in progress.  The main stage is about the same size as the entire 1,700 seating area complete with a trap below stage and an orchestra pit that can be raised for more seating as well.  Besides the main auditorium, the center will include the campus radio station KCSN-FM, two rehearsal rooms, a smaller 178 seat theater, instructional lecture hall class rooms, stagecraft labs, costume labs and much more.  The construction pictures are from my tour last week.

The whole project costs approximately $125 million.  So far, community fundraising has brought in over $20 million and the state has funded $75 million. The school is looking for contributors to help fund the remaining $28 million.

We will soon have a destination spot to see Broadway plays, modern dance performances, ballet, concerts and much more.  Grand Opening is tentatively scheduled for January 2011.  To learn more about the Valley Performing Arts Center go to www.csun.edu/imagine and for current event information at CSUN go to www.artsnorthridge.csun.com
